PASADENA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2004 MAJOR GRANT RECIPIENTS

This week, the Pasadena Community Foundation (PCF) announced that it is distributing over $280,000 in Major Grants to ten non-profit agencies working to improve the quality of life in our local community. These ten awards are in addition to over $500,000 already distributed this year through scholarship funds, donor advised funds and other Pasadena Community Foundation grant programs. This brings the 2004 grand total for grants from the Pasadena Community Foundation to non-profit service agencies to almost $800,000. “This is a wonderful tribute to the people of our community who have given generously to the Pasadena Community Foundation,” says Gloria Pitzer, Chair of the Foundation Board.

The ten agencies that will each share in the $284,267 from this year’s Major Grant allocations are:

Bishop Gooden Home
The Center for Aging Resources
Community Health Alliance of Pasadena (CHAP)
Five Acres
Foothill Unity Center
Foothill Vocational Opportunities
Hillsides
Pacific Asia Museum
The Sycamores
URDC Human Services Corporation

Each year, PCF distributes close to $1 million to service organizations. Much of that money supports local non-profits while some donor advised gifts also support regional or national institutions. The staff and Board carefully review each application and make site visits designed to familiarize them with the agency’s grant request, finances and performance. “As a local community foundation, we are in a unique position to really understand the needs and programs of area non-profits,” say Jennifer DeVoll, Executive Director of the Foundation. “That knowledge helps us to be more effective grant makers.”

Founded in 1953 through a $1 million endowment from Louis and Marion Webb, the Pasadena Community Foundation (formerly the Pasadena Foundation) works with donors to establish charitable funds. From these funds, the Foundation provides grants and assistance to nurture and strengthen community organizations. Its Regular Grant’s program distributes funds in December. The maximum amount awarded through this program is $8,000. In May, the Major Grants are announced with a cap of $50,000 for each award.

The Pasadena Community Foundation is one of over 600 community foundations throughout the United States. Its goal is to build involvement and investment in our community by developing and sharing resources for the common good and by demonstrating wide-spread community support.
