IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A $226,487 CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
Because of their efforts on behalf of others, the 51-year-old Pasadena Community Foundation (PCF) is saluting 33 not-for-profit community-based organizations with grants totaling $226,487. These grants, mailed out on December 2 nd, are in response to more than 65 requests for funds received by the Foundation for this funding cycle. When combining these regular grants with the Foundation’s other granting programs, the total amount of grant money distributed by the Pasadena Community Foundation for 2004 exceeds l.6 million dollars.
Grant requests are as diverse as the services provided by Pasadena’s many non-profit agencies. To keep the water warm and ready for seniors and those with special medical conditions, the AAF Rose Bowl Aquatics Center will apply their grant to the purchase of a cover for their therapy pool. The Altadena Christian Children’s Center will use theirs to replace the roof over their heads. The Girl Scouts will install new lighting in their outdoor parking lot at Camp Mariposa thus providing greater safety to users. At Casa de las Amigas, a new outdoor wheelchair lift will enable them to better serve the handicapped while at the Pasadena Playhouse, 25 new headphones will make it possible for the hearing impaired to attend performances. And the Pasadena Symphony will apply their grant to the purchase of musical instruments to be used as a part of the TEMPO program they operate in PUSD classrooms. All this is made possible by countless local contributors to the Pasadena Community Foundation.
The Pasadena Community Foundation builds charitable funds to provide support to the local non-profit community and provide services to donors in setting up and administering these funds. Essentially, the Foundation is a collection of over 80 charitable funds, which total about $19 million - Pasadena’s own philanthropic nest egg. Some of these funds make up the unrestricted endowment of the Foundation from which PCF’s Board awards grants. Other funds are established by local residents who stay involved by directing gifts to charitable causes from these Donor Advised funds.
Over its-51-year-old history, the Foundation has distributed over $26 million to non-profit service organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in our local community and beyond. In 2004, donors who made unrestricted donations to the Foundation through Fellows gifts subsidized the competitive grants programs by over $40,000 in contributions. In addition, donor advisors donated over $685,000 to PCF component funds and gave over $1 million out to charity through the Foundation. Overall in 2004, the Foundation will distribute about $1.6 million in charitable gifts.
