FOUNDATION BRINGS CHRISTMAS SPIRIT TO UNION STATION

Recognizing that the need is urgent, the Board of the Pasadena Community Foundation stepped forward today with an emergency discretionary grant of $20,000 to Union Station Homeless Services. The grant will enable Union Station to replace a large cargo van that was stolen last month from the organization’s headquarters on Orange Grove Blvd. Food transported in this vehicle helps Union Station to feed approximately 9,000 people per year, particularly during the holiday season.

Although recently recovered, the original van was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. Therefore, the 55-year-old Pasadena Community Foundation moved quickly to assist Union Station, one of the primary organizations to feed the hungry in Pasadena. This is in accordance with the mission of the Pasadena Community Foundation which works to assist those in greatest need living and working in the Pasadena area. According to Jennifer DeVoll, Executive Director of the community foundation, “Social problems facing the community are complex. This was a problem that just jumped out at us as something we could solve. Our Board acted quickly to unanimously support this gift outside of our normal funding cycle. We have also made a commitment to increase our funding levels to the community in 2009.”

The grant will be made before Christmas so that Union Station can maintain its Christmas feeding program upon which so many people depend.
